What is the Tirzepatide peptide?

Tirzepatide is an analog peptide to the glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (GIP). It serves as an incretin and stimulates insulin production.

Unlike GIP, Tirzepatide has a modified amino acid chain of 39 lipidated amino acids. This modification improves cell uptake and metabolic stability.

Tirzepatide is currently being studied for its impact on type 2 diabetes, obesity, bone metabolism, the pancreas, and the central nervous system.

Tirzepatide and Weight loss

A meta-analysis of 9 studies with over 7,000 test subjects with diabetes revealed that Tirzepatide may result in greater weight loss compared to GLP-1 agonists like Semaglutide.
These studies lasted from 8 to 52 weeks, and the average weight loss achieved by the subjects was around 5kg.
Moreover, Tirzepatide seemed to demonstrate improved glycemic control in comparison to Semaglutide and insulin.
According to Permana et al., “Tirzepatide has exhibited superiority in glycemic control and body weight reduction with a good safety profile in patients with T2D.“
Tirzepatide has also been suggested to induce weight loss regardless of whether the test subject has diabetes.
In one trial involving 2,539 obese subjects with at least one weight-related complication (excluding diabetes), Tirzepatide therapy led to a significant reduction in body weight.
During the course of 72 weeks of therapy, subjects experienced at least a 20% reduction in body weight or more, while the placebo group only achieved 3% weight loss over the same period.
